Three years ago, petitioners filed a class action suit demanding that all Wolt couriers become employees. As part of its promotion of the principles of individual liberty, Kohelet Policy Forum joined the proceedings and represented couriers who wished to preserve their independence, allowing them to work when and how they chose. We think workers’ choices should be respected, and paternalism harmful to all parties should be avoided, especially when the workers have explicitly stated during proceedings that they are satisfied with the status quo and object to change.
The case made its way to the National Labor Court, which sought the opinion of the Attorney General.
The Attorney General recently filed her opinion, which adopted our position, arguing that Wolt couriers should not be forced into a status they don’t want, but rather, every worker should have the right to choose their own form of employment.
Passover, our holiday of liberty, can serve to remind us of the importance of employers’ and employees’ freedom to choose the conditions of their contracts.
